NATIONAL COUNCIL DEBATE ON COVER PRICES

Question: Has the NFRN adopted a policy to remove cover prices on newspapers and magazines?

Answer: No.

Question: So what did the November National Council debate and what did they vote on?

Answer: To investigate the feasibility of removing cover prices from newspapers and magazines.

As you can see, an agreement to carry out an investigation is a far cry from agreeing to carry out an action, but, thanks to some regrettable reporting in the Trade Press, a great deal of emotion has been generated amongst some members who believe that the Federation has embarked on a path to get cover prices removed.

As subsequent National Council meetings may also debate controversial topics, you are reminded that the Policy making forum of the NFRN is not National Council but Annual Conference.

On the last occasion that Annual Conference debated the removal of cover prices, Conference delegates rejected the proposal.  Maintenance of cover prices is, therefore, the current NFRN policy and will remain so unless and until this is reversed by a future affirmative Motion to Annual Conference.
