New Battery Regulations Take Effect from February 1

From February 1 2010, if you sell more than 32kg a year of portable batteries in your store (the equivalent of one four pack of AA batteries a day),  you will need to take back used batteries from the public free of charge.

To help you determine whether you supply 32kg or more of portable batteries per year defra has developed a simple calculator.

Defra has also produced downloadable posters for retailers, to help them meet their obligation to inform end-users about their take-back service. To download your posters simply click here.

A list of frequently asked questions and answers is also available.  Click here to find out more.

Business information on battery recycling is also available from the Business Link website or the Defra helpline on 08459 335577,

Meanwhile the NFRN's preferred wholesaler, Booker, has stepped in to help retailers comply with the new legislation. Working with recycling company Valpak, it will be offering customers a free of charge collection service and battery recycling kit which includes battery collection boxes and window stickers.

Two sizes of boxes are available: the small box is ideal for the counter, with a larger box to store the used batteries in, before telephoning to arrange a free collection.

“Booker is committed to helping our customers operate a successful business,” said Steve Fox, Sales Director – Retail.  “Offering this service is another reason to drive footfall into stores.  A battery recycling store locator, where shoppers can search for their nearest service is also available on www.recycle-more.co.uk, so stores can add themselves to this site to help raise awareness.”
